How to Choose the Best Dinnerware Set

When shopping for your next dinnerware set, you will need to decide on the material. The material will drive the durability, weight, aesthetic, functionality, and overall price. Here are the material options.

Bone China

Bone China Dinnerware is the best for refined formal dinnerware. When the bone ash is added to the porcelain it then becomes delicate, slightly translucent, and perfectly constructed material that will have the milky white luminous glaze. Bone China is thin and lightweight and considered the most durable ceramic dinnerware. The Cons of Bone China is that not all of them are dishwasher safe, microwave safe, and chip resistant. Make sure you check the features and care instructions before buying Bone China dinnerware.

Porcelain

Porcelain is ubiquitous ceramic dinnerware that is referred to as china. Porcelain is a little less expensive than that of bone china, and with the right price, durability, and weight. This dinnerware is great for daily use and formal dinnerware parties. They have a glazed, non-porous surface that makes them dishwasher safe, microwave safe, and sometimes oven safe.

Stoneware

Stoneware is more popular due to its rustic and textured aesthetic. It is heavier, thicker, less durable, and more porous than that porcelain and bone china, and stoneware is inexpensive. The stoneware pieces may not uniformly stack for storage, especially if they are handmade. Stainless steel utensils leave marks on the lightly glazed stoneware. This is not an imperfection; they can be wiped off with commercially available cleaners. Stoneware is great for everyday use if do not mind the extra care needed.

How to Find the Best Dinnerware

Dinnerware sets will come in combinations of serving sets for one, four, six, eight, or twelve people depending on the brand.

Formal sets will include a dinner plate, salad plate, bread plate, soup bowl, teacup, and saucer for a place setting.

Traditional sets
will include a dinner plate, salad plate, cereal bowl, and a mug. Some sets will not include the mugs and you need to find a suitable match separately.

Open stock dinnerware will allow you to pick and choose your pieces rather than buy a set with the pieces you do not need. Buying pieces separately can be more expensive than buying the complete dinnerware set, it’s cheaper to replace individual broken pieces from the open stock option.

  1. I never knew that deciding on plate sets could be so educational. I’ve heard of Porcelain and Stoneware plates but, I have never heard of the Bone China dinnerware. Anyhow, I do like the Indigo 16 piece square set. I’ve always wondered what was the difference between the square plate and the round plate, besides the shape.

I like the pointer you’ve given me for future plate purchase. I didn’t realize that there was a such thing as open stock dinnerware. In the past when I have made a purchase for dinnerware. It’s always included items that I didn’t really need.  I have a large family, so I need more plates than salad plates, and mugs.

Yes, the open stock dinnerware is referred to as buying the pieces without the need for the salad plates and the mugs. Just like my family, we very usually the mugs with our kids instead use kid-size tumblers or tall tumblers on the go.

  2. Hi Jannette, I’ve just gone through your article about how to choose the best dinnerware set. I find this article very informative and educative. Little did I know that when the bone ash is added to porcelain it becomes a delicate and slightly translucent material as you’ve clearly stated in your post. I’m definitely going to buy the elama charlotte porcelain 20 pieces dinnerware set and will share this amazing information.

Yes, many consumers really don’t take the time to research how dinnerware is made. It is interesting to learn how everyday dinnerware is made. Thanks for your comment.

  3. Turquoise is my favorite color. And when I saw the Elama clay heart’s dinnerware I absolutely loved it! So I purchased it because of the design. But once it arrived I noticed that every piece was packed well and had no broken items. The plates are nice and thick. Even for stoneware, it’s lighter than most. And my favorite part is that it doesn’t get hot in the microwave. Now I can say I love the quality!

  4. This post is informative on how to purchase the best dinnerware set.  Out of all the ones in the post I like the purple square rounded plates.  I found it informative on the different types of dinner plate materials.  I usually try to find at least 8 to 12 place servings for when we have guests. so we all have matching dinnerware.  Having a nice dinnerware set makes the table nice for dinners.  I kind of like the Elama Ivory Lotus dinner set too.

Hello Chris, Choosing the best dinnerware set is something that takes time and research. Especially if have kids that need to use every day or entertaining guest on regular basis. The Elamia Ivory Lotus I use for entertaining guests and have three sets. This set is very beautiful and gets lots of compliments.

  5. I always say that one needs to buy the best that your budget allows you to have, and that goes for dinnerware as well. Often the more expensive options are more durable, but you don’t want to have plates that are soo expensive that you feel too precious about them that you do not use them.

I have ended up with two sets of plates, one for everyday family use, and a bone china set for special events and guests. Thankfully we do have so many options available to suit all the tastes and budgets. .
